Independent Forensics adheres to the FBI’s Quality Assurance Standards for DNA testing and is accredited by the Forensic Quality Services to ISO/IEC-17025 Standards (FQS) and subscribes external proficiency testing for both forensic and paternity accreditations. As per inspection and audit guidelines, we have a complete set of laboratory SOPs, QA/QC manuals, Staff Manuals, Safety Documentation, Employee Manuals and MSDS as required by state and federal statutes.
All paternity testing is performed according to the guidelines of the American Association of Blood Banks.
The Department of Health for the State of New York accredits all laboratories doing business in the State of New York.
Our Laboratory Directors
Dr. Karl Reich received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Cornell University and obtained his doctorate in Molecular Biology from UCLA. Dr. Reich’s postdoctoral training included work at the Institut Pasteur in Paris France and at the Stanford Medical School in Stanford, California. Karl has industrial management experience from his years at Abbott Laboratories where he directed numerous molecular biology projects in anti-infectives and diabetes.
Subsequently, he has worked in a number of biotech ventures all related to genomics, genetics, and DNA. He is presently the Chief Scientific Officer of IFI where he oversees the ISO 17025 accredited DNA laboratory and directs the research and development efforts. His services for forensic DNA case review and DNA observations are constantly in demand, and he has testified for state, federal, and international agencies and private clients.
Karl has over 30 years of scientific experience in chemistry, molecular biology, and biochemistry. He has published more than 20 research papers in first-line scientific journals and has received allowances on two molecular biology related patents. Karl has given numerous workshops and presentations domestically and internationally at forensic meetings and onsite at crime labs on body fluid identification, sperm detection and analysis, and DNA rescue techniques for better collection and recovery of touch and low copy number samples. Liz (Graffy) Kopitke serves as the Forensic DNA Technical Leader, IFI’s Quality Manager, and Relationship Testing Supervisor. She has made a number of presentations on forensic biology and DNA analysis, including to the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education and at the 2009 Joint Forensic Association Meeting. Ms. Kopitke joined Independent Forensics in March 2004, where she initially participated in research to develop stain identification methods for human body fluids. She transitioned into DNA analysis of paternity and forensic cases in 2005 and has testified as an expert in forensic DNA analysis in both state and federal court.
Dr. P.W. Boonlayangoor (retired), acted as the lab director and the technical leader. Dr. Boonlayangoor graduated from the Chicago Medical School and started the first private DNA paternity and forensic testing laboratory in the State of Illinois (DNA Immunogenics Institute) and he has and is actively participating in many high-profile cases around the U.S. He also co-authored many of the laws authorizing the use of DNA testing to expedite child support in Illinois.
